Context:
KTRU Houston is Rice University’s student-run radio station. Originally started in 1967 with a 2-watt AM radio prodcast, it took to 91.7 FM by 1975. KTRU ceased FM operations in April 2011, but returned to FM in October 2015, under the new call sign KBLT-LP 96.1 FM (it is also online now). Throughout its history, KTRU has specialized in freeform radio. It has aired a diverse mix of music, from classical to blues to alternative forms of popular music. Since the 1980s, the schedule featured specialty shows that are still on the air, such as chickenskin, Mutant Hardcore and Sunday afternoon jazz. In addition to its programming, KTRU serves the community with its annual Battle of the Bands and annual Outdoor Show of touring and local performers.
Challenge:
Create a poster and t-shirt for the 26th annual KTRU Outdoor Show.
Approach:
The rabbit is the informal mascot of the outdoor show (and has been featured in every year’s graphic). Similarly, the pineapple is an identifying symbol for the radio station. My poster is a playful and contemporary take on these traditional icons.
