Date: Spring 2017
Client: Moody Center for the Arts Student Collaborative
Role: Graphic Designer
Category: Print, Poster, Marketing
Context:
The Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University opened in Spring 2017 as an experimental space for creating and presenting works in all disciplines, as well as a flexible teaching space to encourage new modes of learning. I served on the Moody Student Collaborative as we sought to connect students with this bold, new art space at Rice.
Challenge #1:
The Moody was constructed very far away from most of the dormitories at Rice. As such, it was important to show the student body where the Moody is in relation to where they live and other landmarks around campus. This poster was printed out on 36 x 48 inch paper and posted at student hubs throughout Rice.
Challenge:
In Fall 2016, the Student Collaborative hosted a series events called The Moody Popup to generate excitement leading up to the opening of the Moody Center. The events were hosted in a temporary shipping container called “the juiceBOX” (later the Solar Studios), and each with a different theme (written, visual, & performing arts). I was challenged with creating the marketing strategy and print materials for these 3 events. All events should be seen as related to one another and reference the new Moody Center for the Arts.
Approach:
To create a visual identity for the events, I first designed a series of mockups combining the imagery of the popup space and the upcoming Moody Center space. Thse mockups were reviewed by the planning team, and revised into 1 icon with 3 versions for each event.
Impact:
These minimal posters were striking and recognizable online and in print. Each event was well attended, and the eventual opening of the Moody Center brought in hundreds of students.
