Context:
The Rice Women's Resource Center is not only a space on the Rice University campus, but also a community that fosters personal relationships and conversations. Through a series of educational and social events and programs, RWRC engages with diverse identities to facilitate critical discussion of gender issues. The center also serves as a safe space for expression and development of philosophies and ideologies.
Challenge:
RWRC had an open call for logo redesigns in Spring 2017. In their call, they asked for the logo to embody their newly established values: Inclusivity, Modernity, Strength, Welcome, Activism, & Intersectionality.
Approach:
I began by interviewing friends involved with the organization, as well as sitting down with the volunteer coordinator. As a result of these conversations, I learned that the RWRC is more than a space for women to feel safe, but a place for all of all gender identities to engage in conversation and activism. It is the intersectional and inclusive values of their new mission that ultimately inspired my design. My proposed logo includes is a rose flower icon inspired by the intersection of male and female symbols.
